Shoplifting Penalties
The penalties for shoplifting are determined by the value of the item or
items illegally taken from a retailer. In most cases, shoplifting is considered
a misdemeanor charge, however extreme cases where the value of the merchandise
stolen is high can be upgraded to a state felony charge. You can also
be found guilty of shoplifting if you change the price tag of something
to a lower price before paying for it.
Texas State Law breaks down shoplifting penalties as such:
-
If the value of the merchandise stolen is less than $50, the offense is
considered a
Class C misdemeanor and you will face a fine of $500.
-
If the value of the merchandise stolen is between $50 and $499, the offense
is considered a
Class B misdemeanor and the penalties include 180 days in jail and $2,000 in fines.
-
If the value of the merchandise stolen is between $500 and $1,499, the
offense is considered a
Class A misdemeanor and the penalties include 1 year in jail and $4,000 in fines.
-
If the value of the merchandise stolen is between $1,500 and $19,999, the
offense is considered a
